Valentine’s Day may look a little different this year, but you can still celebrate the ones you love – something that I think we all need a little bit more of this year. I know I definitely do… and what better way to show your friends and family that you love them then through the love of good food.

These recipes are perfect to make at home, with no ridiculous ingredients or equipment and can be adapted to your own (or the person receiving these delicious goodies) likes and preferences. Plus, they can all be made in advance and sent to your special recipient if you’re unable to celebrate together this year! Just make sure to pack them up securely, label that it’s food so should not be left on the doorstep and should be handled and labelled fragile – make sure to use a trusted delivery company to ensure it arrives in perfect condition (and doesn’t get eaten on the way!)

I have a range of different gifts that would make anyone’s day – and you can even get the kids involved with making these two. I’ve added a few little tips and tricks along the way for little hands to help out – the perfect way to get them in the kitchen and sharing the love over good food even further! Plus, it makes for a great Valentine’s Day activity for the whole family.

Whatever you are doing this Valentine’s Day – sending you all the biggest virtual-hugs and love, Niki xx

Homemade Truffles

There’s just something so decadent and luxurious about a truffle, and even more so when it’s home-made. They are also a lot easier to make than people think. The best way to get a deliciously fudgy truffle is to use a secret ingredient such as black beans or avocado (but perhaps don’t let the kids see that bit, if they are picky eaters)

Chocolate Avocado Truffles

Top Kid Tip:

Rather than melting your chocolate on a Bain Marie which can get very hot – use the microwave and then let them stir the chocolate until it’s nice and melted. Use a microwave safe plastic bowl and melt in the microwave on small 10second bursts and stir in-between. When 2/3s are melting, just keep stirring until the rest is melted too. Plus let them get their hands dirty and help roll the truffles!

Chocolate Cake:

Who doesn’t love chocolate cake – it’s simple, it’s delicious and it can be used to celebrate all kinds of occasions. Plus you can literally go wild on flavour combinations! My favourite is this deliciously rich cake with an even richer ganache topping – the perfect gift for any chocoholic!

Top Kid Tip:

This is a great one for kids of all ages to help with. You can help them measure out and split out all the dry and wet ingredients in separate bowls, getting them used to measurements. Get them to stir the dry ingredients and wet ingredients separately before combining them all together. Stirring is a great option for kids to help with as its safer than other tasks. Add a tea-towel under the bowl to stop it moving while stirring!

Muffins or Cupcakes

Everyone loves cupcakes and muffins, right? It’s like an individual cake made just for you! Plus, they’re pre-portioned so won’t go stale after cutting into them like a larger cake, so will stay fresher for longer. These are great to send to someone because they can be packaged a lot easier than a full cake! I absolutely love the zing from these Lemon and Elderflower Cupcakes but feel free to change up the flavour!

Top Kid Tip:

Want to change up the flavour – get your little one to stir in some cacao and maple syrup into some peanut (or other nut butter) to make homemade Nutella, that can be stirred into your batter or used as a delicious frosting!

Biscuits or Cookies

Always a good choice because they stay fresh for a few days if you keep them in an air-tight container and you can completely customise them. You can add different chopped fruits and nuts or decorate with icing and sprinkles – go crazy, let your creativity go wild! I personally prefer nuts on mine, so these Oaty Nutty ones are perfect!

Top Kid Tip:

Get your little ones to help out by cutting all the different biscuit shapes. Don’t have any cutters – go on a scavenger hunt and find different shaped bowls/glasses/toys (Lego Bricks works great) that can be used instead. Just make sure to thoroughly clean them before pressing into the dough.

Chocolate Bark

This is the ultimate gift because you can choose the toppings they love the most. From chopped fruits and nuts, to pretzels and sweets or even broken up chocolate bars! It’s also a great way to use up any leftover ingredients that you don’t have enough of to make something out of – just mix it all together and throw it on top! A great way to change food waste into something delicious!

Top Kid Tip:

Place all your toppings into separate bowls and let them sprinkle and place on top of the bark while it’s setting. Little hands love creating art – and edible art is even better! Make sure that the chocolate is cool enough before they start – but not too cold that it’s set.
